Capture notes anywhere in RemNote

Quick Add lets you capture notes without breaking your flow. You can open it from anywhere in RemNote, write what you need, and save it directly to a document without navigating away from what you were doing.

By default, Quick Add saves to today’s Daily Document, which makes it especially useful for quick reminders, tasks, ideas, and notes you want to sort out later. If you already know where a note belongs, you can change the destination before saving it.

Opening Quick Add

You can open Quick Add in a few different ways:

  1. Open the Omnibar with Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac).

  2. Type q or quick add.

  3. Select the Quick Add action.

You can also open Quick Add directly with a keyboard shortcut. By default, this is Cmd+Fn+` on Mac and Ctrl+Fn+` on Windows.

Note: You can customize this shortcut in Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts. See Keyboard Shortcuts for more on changing shortcuts.

In the desktop app, there is also a separate shortcut called Operating System: Quick Add. This lets you focus the RemNote desktop app and open the Quick Add menu even when you are currently working in another app.

Writing in Quick Add

Quick Add uses the regular RemNote editor, so you can use the same editing features you use in normal documents. For example, you can:

  • Create flashcards

  • Add formatting (make text bold, italic, add math blocks, and so on).

  • Insert Rem References with [[ or @

  • Create tags with ##

  • Add a reference to a date with !!

  • Create todos with Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac)

If you already know how to work in the editor, Quick Add will feel familiar right away. If you want a refresher on editor basics, see 5-Minute Editor Overview.

Choosing where Quick Add saves

At the bottom of the Quick Add window, click Adding to to choose the document where your note will be saved.

By default, Quick Add saves to today’s Daily Document. This is helpful when you want to capture something quickly and organize it later.

Using Quick Add on mobile

On the mobile app, you can also quickly capture notes from the Home page using the Quick add input field. It works the same way as Quick Add as described above, so you can quickly write a note and save it to today’s Daily Document or another document.

If you want even faster access, you can use the mobile widget that lets you open Quick Add from your device’s home screen with the keyboard opened and focused in the Quick Add area.

Common use cases

  • While planning your day: If you remember a task you need to do later, open Quick Add and add it as a todo in today’s Daily Document.

  • While reading in RemNote Reader: If you run into an interesting idea in a PDF and want to explore it later, open Quick Add and leave yourself a note before continuing to read.

  • While working in another app: In the desktop app, use the Operating System: Quick Add shortcut to jump into RemNote, capture the note, and return to what you were doing.
