Each user has a designated quota of AI credits per month for features such as AI flashcard generation and the AI tutor. The quota system ensures the significant costs associated with providing AI services don't rise to a point where we are no longer able to offer them.

AI credit usage resets at the beginning of every month. During the month, each use of an AI feature consumes a number of AI credits proportional to the number of tokens it consumes (i.e., the length of the message sent to prompt the AI and the message sent back).

The exact number of AI credits available will change from time to time as our actual cost to provide AI features changes. Free users receive a limited number of AI credits, enough to try out the features, while Pro users receive 10 times as many, enough for most users to do real work with AI.

If the alloted AI credits are insufficient for your use, Pro users can use RemNote AI an unlimited amount by setting up an account with OpenAI, configuring a payment method, creating an API key, and entering the API key in Settings > Advanced > AI > OpenAI API Key. Your monthly RemNote AI credits will be used until they are exhausted, then OpenAI will bill you directly for any remaining AI usage.

You can check the current month's AI credit usage in the banner at the top of Settings > Advanced > AI.

RemNote will also notify you in the lower-left corner of the app when you reach 80% and 100% of your AI credit quota.

RemNote's AI features send some of the content of your notes to OpenAI for processing. See Can third parties see my notes? and review OpenAI's privacy policy for details. Notes marked Super Private will not be processed by AI.

If you are not comfortable with this, you can opt out of all AI features by unchecking the “AI Features” checkbox in the settings page.
