The AI Tutor Chat is your personal learning assistant built into RemNote. It has an extensive set of tools that let it search your Knowledge Base, help you learn, create documents and content for you, and help you use RemNote more efficiently. For almost anything you want to achieve for your learning or thinking, you can ask the AI Tutor and it can help.

What the AI Tutor can do
Help you learn anything
The AI Tutor can read your documents (notes, handwritten notes, and PDFs) and create quizzes, flashcards, and study guides to help you learn.
Ask the chat:
"Quiz me on lecture 1 and 2, focused on chemical bonds"
"Make flashcards from the first 3 lectures"
"Make study guide for this PDF"
"Explain this slide like I'm five"
"Tell me how portals in RemNote work."
When the AI Tutor explains something, you can click on any part of the explanation to get a further breakdown. If there's anything you want to remember, click the flashcard icon at the bottom of any response to immediately turn that response into a flashcard.
Practice quizzes
You can ask the AI Tutor to set up a practice exam on any document or folder. When the quiz widget appears, you can customize it with multiple choice or free response recall, set the number of questions, and choose what you want to focus on.
You can be quizzed on a single document, or you can ask the AI Tutor to quiz you on an entire folder. For example, if you ask "Quiz me on my amino acids and biology folder," the AI Tutor will find those documents and create a quiz that draws on all of them.
Search your documents
The AI Tutor can search your documents and find information anywhere in your account. You get clear responses and summaries, with exact citations that you can click to jump to the relevant notes.
Ask the chat:
"Search what is John's phone number?"
"Find all documents where we talk about the Solar System"
"Remind me, what did we cover in our last biology lecture?"
"Summarize my activity from the last 3 days"
Create documents, notes, and tables
The AI Tutor can create documents, notes, and tables for you. After generating content, you can insert it into a new or existing document in your Knowledge Base.
Ask the chat:
"Make a table of amino acids"
"Make a document of key takeaways from lectures 3 and 4 from the computer science class"
"Make a summary of everywhere I've mentioned mitochondria"
Read what's on your screen
The AI Tutor can read anything on your screen if you ask it to. If you're looking at a flashcard or reading a document and something confuses you, simply ask "Explain this." The AI Tutor will see the content you're currently focused on and write a clear explanation for you.
If you're reading a PDF, you can ask exact questions about anything you're confused about and get responses with citations to the relevant pages.
Help you lean how to use RemNote
The AI Tutor can help you learn how to use RemNote, with step-by-step instructions. It will find the relevant help articles or settings and give you clear guidance on how to configure your account.
Ask the chat:
"How do I set up dark mode?"
"How can I make a reading list table?"
Adding context to the chat
In the chat window, you can add context by uploading a new file or referencing a specific RemNote document.
The chat input is a standard RemNote editor, so you can also paste images, use Rem References by pressing @ or [[ to point the AI Tutor to a specific document, or use any other editing features you're familiar with.
Generating flashcards from AI Tutor responses
As you have conversations with the AI Tutor, you can turn any response into flashcards by clicking the flashcard icon at the bottom of that response. This opens the interface for generating flashcards with AI and lets you select what kinds of flashcards you'd like to create and which ones you'd like to add to your Knowledge Base.
If you've found a gap in your understanding, this is a great way to make sure you don't get confused again!
Chat history
You can access a history of all your past AI Tutor chats by clicking the history icon in the top-right corner of the chat window. From there, you can revisit any previous conversation or start a new empty chat.
Choosing a model
The AI Tutor offers a variety of models for different use cases. You can switch between models using the model selector in the chat window.
Smart Balanced (recommended) is optimized for the best balance of intelligence, knowledge, speed, and accuracy.
Smart Fast is ideal if you always want ultra-fast answers.
Frontier models from OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), and Google (Gemini) are also available.
Note: Frontier models can be quite expensive to run. The AI credit costs are directly what the underlying AI provider charges. RemNote adds no cost on top.
Customizing AI Tutor
You can personalize the AI Tutor in Settings > AI:
Your Name for AI - Add your name so the AI Tutor uses it when talking to you.
AI Generation Language - While the AI Tutor defaults to English and will follow the language you write in, you can set a specific language here so the AI Tutor always responds in that language.
