Hiding Ancestors on Flashcards

Trim down the context shown on flashcards by hiding ancestor bullets.

Written by Soren Bjornstad

When you practice a flashcard, by default RemNote will show all of the bullets above the flashcard itself in the hierarchy. Usually this is what you want – it means you can make your cards more concise, saving you typing and reducing the amount of reading you have to do when practicing.

However, sometimes this can result in giving the answer away! If it's impractical or undesirable to restructure your notes to avoid the answer being present in a bullet point higher up, you may wish to hide some of the parent/ancestor bullets on a flashcard.

Automatic hiding of spoiler ancestors

RemNote already handles the most obvious case for you: if an ancestor bullet's entire text is contained within the flashcard's answer, RemNote automatically hides that ancestor in the queue. Since you're about to see the full text anyway once the answer appears, there's no reason to show it beforehand and spoil the card, so you don't need to configure anything for this. It just happens.

This only covers exact, full-text matches, though. If an ancestor only partially overlaps with the answer, or gives the answer away without matching it word for word, RemNote won't catch it, and you'll want to hide that ancestor yourself using one of the tools below.

Manually hiding ancestors in queue

When practicing or previewing a flashcard , if you hover over the Document's name, you can click on the hide icon to remove the breadcrumb and document title. Bullets above the flashcard in the hierarchy that are within the document will still appear.

Clicking the ellipsis () will show the breadcrumb and document again.

Selective hiding

For cases when the basic Hide Ancestors option is not enough, you can use the Hide in Queue plugin (install this from Settings > Plugins).

Hide in Queue provides three power-ups which you can apply to bullets to customize the hierarchy display:

  • /no hierarchy: When applied to a flashcard (not a parent), none of the card's ancestors will be shown during practice (even ones within the same document).

  • /hide in queue: When the bullet to which this power-up is applied appears in the queue as context (on any flashcard below it), you will see only faded text Hidden. When the card's answer is shown, the hidden content will also become visible.

  • /remove from queue: Like /hide in queue, but there is no Hidden placeholder, and the bullet remains hidden on the back side of the card as well.
